Bio-Itza (Peten)
Help Save the Rain Forest while Learning Spanish and Living with a Contemporary Mayan Family.Bio-Itza is a Spanish language school that offers students volunteer opportunities such as reforestation, the creation of an interpretive forest trail and environmental education in public schools. Food and accommodations are provided by local families in a rustic but comfortable setting. Classes begin each Monday of the year. The school is open year round. Minimum stay is one week, while many students choose to spend several weeks to several months. The fee for 20 hours of private (one-on-one) Spanish language instruction, meals, and accommodations with a local family is $200 weekly. In addition to generating jobs in the community, proceeds from the school support other projects such as the conservation of the Bio-Itza Reserve, a 36 km community forest reserve located Northwest of San Jose.

Eco-Escuela (Peten)
The Eco-Escuela is a community-owned business started by Conservation International. It is located in the picturesque lakeside village of San Andres, Peten. The school offers private language instruction (one-on-one), an opportunity to experience rural life in Guatemala through living and sharing meals with a local family. The program starts on Mondays, throughout the year. Minimum stay is one week (average stay is 3-4 wks). No experience necessary. All ages welcome. Students may volunteer on conservation and community development projects while attending the school.

Institute for International Cooperation and Development (IICD)
IICD is a non profit organization. Each year IICD prepares teams of volunteers for work in developing nations. In conjunction with Humana People to People, IICD volunteers actively implement programs in health education, construction, agriculture and education.
Programs for 2000: Feb ; India/Zambia//Nicaragua/El-Salvador May ; Angola/Mozambique/Zimbabwe/Honduras/Guatemala August ; India/Zambia/El-Salvador/Nicaragua. There is a program fee.
